Speech and Language Therapy
The Speech & Language Therapy (SALT) team are in school from Monday- Friday and you can contact us on Rumworth’s telephone number 01204 333600 or if you have any queries or concerns regarding your child’s/young person’s communication or feeding. You can also leave messages with the Speech and Language Therapy clerical team, who are based at Breightmet Health Centre on 01204 462670.
The SALT team work with children/young people who have identified speech, language and communication needs and/or feeding difficulties.
The SALT team liaise and work with:
- parents and carers
- Educational staff - teachers, Special Needs Coordinators, Teaching Assistants, Educational Psychologists;
- Health professionals - Paediatricians, Nurse, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists;
Children and young people learn best when everyone supporting them – parents, school and the therapy team – help children and young people to practice skills on a daily basis.
The SALT team encourage a Total Communication approach.
Total communication is the ability to communicate by whatever means available to help a child understand what is being said and express what they want to say.
This might include a combination of any of the following:
- Natural gesture e.g. pointing, facial expression, body movements.
- Speech
- Using different pitch, tones or volume of the voice
- AAC – Alternative and augmentative Communication
- Signs
- Symbols
- Real objects
- Pictures
- Photos
