Rumworth School

Rumworth 6th Form

At Rumworth 6th Form, our curriculum is designed to promote independence and employability among our students. We believe in providing a well-rounded education that caters to the individual needs of each student, while equipping them with the necessary skills for a successful transition into the workforce. Our curriculum is driven by two key areas: independence and employability.

Employability

To foster employability skills, all students have access to discrete teaching in either horticulture or catering. These vocational subjects provide practical skills and knowledge related to these industries. Additionally, all students receive discreet ‘Preparation for Working Life’ lessons that cover essential employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving and workplace etiquette.

Independence

Promoting independence is a core focus across all subjects. We offer discreet weekly lessons dedicated to teaching independence skills. These lessons cover various aspects of daily living, personal care, travel training, money management and decision-making. Form teams work closely with students to set individual targets based on their Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) documents, ensuring that their specific needs and goals are addressed.

Core Subjects

English and Maths are core subjects and are an integral part of the students' daily curriculum. Students work towards functional skills qualifications appropriate for their learning level. These qualifications provide practical and functional knowledge in these subjects, ensuring that students gain the necessary literacy and numeracy skills to thrive in their daily lives and future employment.

Options Lessons

Following the pandemic, we introduced a range of engaging option lessons to reinvigorate students' learning experiences. These options include the following lessons: Sports Leaders, Outdoor Adventure Activities, Child Care, Photography, Newspaper, Animal Care, Dance/Drama, Music, Art, Hair & Beauty, Enterprise, ICT, Baking, Design Tech, D of E, Literacy Leaders and Yoga. These lessons are designed to broaden students' horizons, develop their interests and talents, and promote personal growth.

GCSE

This academic year, we are offering a GCSE in physics for a small cohort of students who have demonstrated the ability to achieve this qualification. This opportunity allows them to pursue academic challenges and gain a broader range of qualifications to enhance their future prospects.

PSD and RSE Curriculum

Our Personal, Social, and Health Development (PSD) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum encompasses all the statutory elements while being bespoke to meet the ever-changing needs of our complex young adults. This curriculum is designed to provide students with essential life skills, social awareness and emotional well-being support, enabling them to navigate the challenges of adulthood successfully.

Preparation for Adulthood

Across Rumworth, our Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) curriculum is an integral part of all subject areas. The PfA agenda is not taught as a discrete subject. We believe that by incorporating the PfA agenda into all aspects of our curriculum, we can better prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities they will face as adults.

Sport

We firmly believe that regular exercise and sports contribute to the holistic development of our students. By incorporating sports and physical education into our curriculum, we ensure that our students have the opportunity to lead healthy and active lives, while also building important life skills that will benefit them well into the future. To this end, all students have sport on their timetable. Where a student may benefit from hydrotherapy, then they can access this during their sport lesson to ensure they are not missing out during other curriculum time.

At Rumworth 6th Form College, we strive to provide a holistic curriculum that nurtures independence, promotes employability, and ensures each student's individual needs are met. By combining vocational training, option lessons, core subjects and personal development, we aim to prepare our students for a fulfilling and independent life beyond their time with us and tackle the poor statistics for SEND learners gaining employment post education.
